WORK EXPERIENCE

Communications Manager • Waterkeepers Chesapeake/Fair Farms
Dec. 2015 to Present (Takoma Park, MD)

Manage the communications for a coalition of 19 Waterkeepers (Riverkeepers, Harborkeepers and Coastkeepers) in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Promote the work of individual keepers through narratives and videos. Gain earned media for policy initiatives through press releases and networking with reporters in print, online, radio and television. Manage the Fair Farms campaign by discovering new partners and leading existing partners up the ladder of engagement. Administer the websites and social media sites for both Waterkeepers Chesapeake and Fair Farms.

Chief of Staff to Maryland State Senator. Mainly responsible for successfully shepherding the Senator’s legislative initiatives and priorities through the 90-day Legislative Session.  Year-round responsibility for managing the office, hiring and supervising staff and interns, scheduling, managing press relations, and meeting with lobbyists, advocates and constituents. Wrote speeches and talking points. Maintained constituent contact database and resolved casework. Attended briefings and events. Organized campaign events and maintained databases and e-blasts for political supporters.

Candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates • “Mitchelle for 30B”
Dec. 2013 to Nov. 2014 (Edgewater, MD)

Ran for the House of Delegates in District 30B. Out-raised my opponent four-to-one, canvassed over 11,000 households and recruited a volunteer bank of 60-plus people. Lost in the General Election.

Co-founder and publisher of locally-owned online news site. Responsible for all technical aspects of site development, marketing materials, promotions and outreach to the local business community.

Local Editor/Group Leader • AOL/Patch Media (Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch)
Oct. 2010 to Jan. 2012 (Edgewater, MD)

Recruited by  AOL to launch Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch. Wrote stories and edited video, photos and freelance contributors. Grew the site to one of the largest (in Unique Visits) in Maryland, despite our rural geographic area. Trained at AOL’s New York headquarters on content management, site promotion and SEO. Knight-Ridder trained in the use of social media to drive site engagement.  Met or exceeded quarterly metrics throughout my tenure.

Responsible for overall print management of Roll Call newspaper. Served on management team to launch Capital Style magazine. Early in the internet era, promoted to run the online division of both titles, (designing the site, overseeing content), and serving on The Economist Newspaper Group’s international online strategy team. Managed multi-million dollar budgets and staff.

On-air Host • “Parent’s Corner” TV Show on AACPS-TV

Research, write and host an Anne Arundel County Public Schools television show on parental involvement.  Interview educational leadership figures.

South River Cluster Representative • Superintendent’s Parental Involvement Advisory Committee/AACPS
2012 to 2016 (Annapolis, MD)

Appointed by Superintendent to two, two-year terms representing the South River cluster.

Member (2011 to present) and Chair (2014 to 2016) • South River High School Business Advisory Board
2011 to 2014 (Edgewater, MD)

Serve to bring businesses into the South River High School community. Organized student mock interviews, resume-writing workshops and college and career fairs. Served on curriculum development team for the school’s Signature program: Global Communication and Public Affairs.

Chair • South River Cluster Redistricting Committee

Chaired committee that determined student redistricting plan for primary and secondary schools.

Responsible for marketing and recruitment. Grew membership to full capacity.

Served as legislative liaison to the Maryland General Assembly, Anne Arundel County Council and Anne Arundel County Board of Education, representing 81 PTA-affiliated schools. Worked closely with parents, school administrators, faculty and others to prioritize legislative agenda.
